Background of the Study

Effective inventory management is crucial for the success of retail businesses, where operational efficiency directly impacts customer satisfaction and profitability. Shoprite Nigeria, one of the largest retail chains in the country, relies on advanced inventory management techniques to ensure the availability of goods, minimize waste, and optimize costs (Ojo & Balogun, 2023).

Inventory management techniques such as economic order quantity (EOQ), just-in-time (JIT), and automated inventory systems have revolutionized retail operations, enabling businesses to respond promptly to market demands. However, in Nigeria, the retail industry faces challenges such as supply chain disruptions, high logistics costs, and inconsistent data management systems (Adeoye et al., 2024).

This study explores how inventory management techniques influence operational efficiency at Shoprite Nigeria, focusing on best practices and areas for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Shoprite Nigeria operates in a challenging retail environment characterized by fluctuating consumer demand, supply chain bottlenecks, and rising operational costs. Ineffective inventory management can lead to stockouts, overstocking, and wastage, ultimately affecting operational efficiency and profitability. Despite the potential benefits of advanced inventory management techniques, their adoption in the Nigerian retail sector remains limited due to infrastructure gaps, inadequate technology, and training deficiencies (Chukwu et al., 2025).

This study investigates the impact of inventory management techniques on operational efficiency at Shoprite Nigeria, addressing critical challenges and opportunities.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of inventory management techniques on operational efficiency at Shoprite Nigeria.
  2. To identify the inventory management practices used by the company.
  3. To assess the challenges and opportunities of implementing advanced inventory management techniques in the Nigerian retail sector.

Research Questions

  1. How do inventory management techniques affect operational efficiency at Shoprite Nigeria?
  2. What inventory management practices are employed by the company?
  3. What challenges and opportunities exist in implementing advanced inventory management techniques in retail?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Inventory management techniques significantly improve operational efficiency at Shoprite Nigeria.
  2. The adoption of advanced inventory practices enhances inventory accuracy and reduces wastage.
  3. Challenges in implementing inventory management techniques limit their effectiveness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on Shoprite Nigeria’s inventory management practices and their impact on operational efficiency. Limitations include access to company-specific inventory data and generalization to other retail chains.
